"Snakes and Runners" Bandana Original Illustration by Cloudsong

22" USA-Made Cotton Bandana | Limited Edition

Screen-printed in Colorado with water-based, black light reactive ink (no PVC, no phthalates).
Drawn by a human with a Wacom Cintiq tablet + Adobe Illustrator (No AI Art).

This image portrays two Greater Roadrunners (Geococcyx californianus) in flight, with two Black-tailed Rattlesnakes (Crotalus molossus) behind. Flowers pointing towards desert chaparral decorate this screen-printed USA-made bandana. This design symbolizes triumph over adversity, aligning with deep rhythms of the Earth.

The Roadrunner is a clever hunter, performing a dance of sorts when facing the highly venomous rattlesnake. After exhausting the snake of its venom, the roadrunner snatches the snake at the base of its head and breaks its spine on the ground. Desert ecologies maintain balance through these ancient rhythms we see between predator and prey.

Each animal possesses rich folklore across the American Southwest and Central America, and ultimately, we see that the Roadrunner is connected to untraceable protection. This bird moves through dangerous country without being followed - its x-shaped tracks point in both directions. Sometimes you get through adversity from fighting, and sometimes from being unreadable.

The rattlesnake becomes a symbol of ancient relational authority - a first-world being that is so ancient, it carries a deep voice from the Earth. Some First Nations folks see the Rattlesnake as bad medicine - a symbol so evil it's banished from the lands. Some see a snake that does not strike without speaking first. Perhaps this makes it a symbol of the terms the earth sets — terms that exist whether or not you've learned them. Illness, drought, death: these come not from the snake's malice but from a broken relationship that the snake had the authority to enforce. Respect it, and it carries your prayers to the rain. Ignore it, and you were warned.
